direct benefits of practicing yoga for your golf game
"Sandra's Yoga For Golfers Program has not only added at least 15 yards to my drives, it has sharpened my focus and increased my strength and flexibility, not only on my game but my everyday routines"
-Alison Holmes, Brampton, Ontario
In his book, Training a Tiger: A Father’s Guide to Raising a Winner in Golf and Life (HarperCollins, 1998), Earl Woods, father of great Tiger Woods, reminds his son, “If you don’t clutter your conscious mind with endless pointers and tips, you make it easier for your subconscious instincts to guide you.”
"The western world is more open to eastern philosophy in which disciplines like yoga emphasize the power of the intuitive mind over cognitive thought.”
-Jaime Diaz, Senior writer, Golf Digest and Golf World
All the instruction in the world won’t help you if you allow stress to seep into your game. The stress of negative self-talk disrupts the flow of concentration, and therefore, impairs the physical aspects of the golf game.
Physically – yoga incorporates flexibility, strength, balance, core conditioning, breathing awareness, teaching focus, relaxation and visualization techniques.
Flexibility - flexibility increases your range of motion (ROM) in the golf swing, reduces swing faults caused by short, tight muscles and produces more club speed.
Strength - long, lean muscles are developed, increasing strength without restricting the golf swing. Yoga uses the force of gravity and your own body weight to build strength.
Balance - in golf, balance in your stance and throughout the entire swing plane is vital for a repeatable, reliable golf swing.
Core Conditioning - strengthening abdominal and back muscles is a critical element for golf performance and longevity in the sport. Working the core supports posture and address, reduces fatigue in the golf swing and putting stance and is direct correlation to trunk rotation. To hit the ball further, longer and with less fatigue, you must exercise your core.
Breathing - breathing awareness is the number one element in the practice of yoga. By practicing long slow deep breaths during yoga practice, breathing awareness becomes second nature – an immediate tool to “feel” your golf game.
Focus, meditation and visualization - meditation practice allows the golfer to focus and visualize each shot. When the body and mind are prepared for subliminal messages and focus techniques. Developing a quieter mind will increase concentration and visualization capabilities.
